Earthling - Dark Path

Earthling sound like High On Fire if they had been formed
in Norway - heavy as fuck but with a BM attitude, especially in
the vocal department! There is a big doom influence here but
instead of just more Sabbath riffs being endlessly recycled,
these tracks have a razor sharp edge that have been honed
by the roots of thrash and metal.

Huge sounding and unstoppable, this took me by surprise and
I fucking love it! Quicksilver guitar solos are spewed out with
a real traditional feel to them - sitting on top of this sonic stew
makes them really stand out with clarity. The song structures
break free with some tempo changes and direction but always
keeping the atmosphere of menace. The band as a whole
have a real feel for what they are doing and I cannot wait to
hear the next chapter in their career.

Give it a listen and next time you go out on a trail of
destruction, you will have the perfect soundtrack!

My Midnight Creeps

Albums That Burnt My Soul -
by guest writer JK from the stupendous and amazing blog Stoner HiVe

My Midnight Creeps – Histamin

When Tony asked me to write something for his new ‘Albums That Burnt Your Soul’ project my mind drifted towards a great many records old and new. Ones that formed me; ones that made this deep love for music grow and the ones that fed and nurtured it to the monstrous beast it now is. Zeppelin, Sabbath, Beatles, Stones, Dylan, Bowie, Parker, Boomtown Rats, Johnny Cash, Iggy Pop, Jefferson Airplane, Nirvana, Dream Theater, Wall of Voodoo, Soundgarden, Faith No More, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Morphine, ZZ Top, The Yardbirds and of course The Doors. I could type away page after page listing all the amazing artists who filled my cup with incredible records and songs till it runneth over and it would still not convey the pure love I have for everything good and honest. Those few who might have stumbled upon the Stoner HiVe blog know of my enthusiastic love for everything that has anything to do with the Rancho De La Luna studio in the Palm Desert. An infatuation started by Kyuss, Masters of Reality and Queens of Stone Age; but has grown into an all encompassing journey that has taken me back into history towards Yawning Man, Across The River, Dead Issues, What Is This?, Walk The Moon and Ministry of Fools. And into an ever growing future filled with an eclectic bunch of artists and has cost me way too much money.

But all that commitment and devotion probably pales in comparison to my undying love for the Norwegian rock band Madrugada and its members. There is even a faint connection between Rancho and Madrugada; and I desperately await the moment that one of the surviving members records or spends a few days in the Palm Desert…

The Tale of My Midnight Creeps…

For some weird and possibly insane reason the night of Thursday the 12th to Friday the 13th has always provided me with something special. Whether it was an amazing meteor shower, luck with the slots, with the sluts or even love. That date always provided a new special memory to remember; sometimes even so big it boggles the mind. Rarely but on occasion it turned twisted and dark. Back in the year 2007 I was on holiday in Cognac region of France. And we had grand adventures during the festival, at the best Cognac house of the world and in the family castle of another doable Cognac brand. That last adventure happened on the night of the 12th. Walking home after a great day at the Festival itself we came across the castle keeper who invited us to join him at the estate. We drank the night away with incredibly expensive Cognacs and cigars. And when the morning came the truly vicious and amazing hangover was cherished. For a hangover caused by liters of Richard is nothing more but a genuine gift. But then the ever so gently rustling sounds of the trees opposite our little tent got brutishly distorted by a digital noise…

I had been spinning one record over and over for about a month. A record made by one of my favorite guitar players from one of my favorite bands. In this band he had mastered the art of playing one note so beautifully he hardly needed more. But since you do want to play more on occasion he founded his own side-project: My Midnight Creeps.

Their second album Histamin was released in June 2007 and quickly became my personal soundtrack. The vague feelings of despair, loss and unease felt when my telephone rang were not caused by the hangover. I felt something was a miss, wrong and that the world would not be the same if I answered. On the other side was a buddy telling me master Robert S. Burås had passed away. After not turning up for a certain gig his friend and bandmember Alex Kloster-Jensen (ex-Ricochets) rushed to his apartment to find him on the couch with his guitar in hand. A day later at the Stavern Festival in Oslo where My Midnight Creeps should have played; their timeslot remained empty and a complete silence crept over the festival grounds…

Burås spent his teens practicing at least five hours a day and developed a fluid style and bluesy sound that became a trademark for the group. An intuitive and fiery player, Burås provided the perfect framework for Sivert Høyem's moody baritone. Born in Bjerkvik, a village with a population of 160 in the Nordland area of northern Norway, in 1975, Robert Burås made his own entertainment as a child. He heard "Jailhouse Rock" by Elvis Presley and "Rock'n'Roll" by Led Zeppelin and formed his first band at 12. Brought up on the Rolling Stones, the Velvet Underground, Jimi Hendrix, the Stooges, and the Jesus & Mary Chain, he met Høyem and Jacobsen, from neighboring towns, and the trio formed Madrugada in the mid-Nineties. With his red curly hair and sideburns, Burås cut a distinctive figure. Ostensibly the most rock'n'roll member of the band, he was warm, generous, very personable and lived for music. He seemed at his happiest treading the boards and trading licks with the guitarist Kid Congo Powers - of the Cramps, the Gun Club and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - who guested on Live At Tralfamadore...

He was a wild, romantic and dramatic character. He lived for his music and searched for something his heart could not name. It broke every time he loved or said goodbye. It jumped with joy on every wild night and with every wild note he played. He suffered from his addictions. To wild times, to the monkey on his back and several substances that are way too dangerous to fool around with. He once admitted to the question of his lifestyle: "I should probably take it easy sometimes. Not go too far." He always tried for the edge and has definitely been one of the few who actually strolled along side before finally falling over…

His music lives on. The amazing songs he produced with his band of brothers in Madrugada and ofcourse the two albums he wrote by himself under the My Midnight Creeps moniker. Histamin shows his love for old school rock ‘n roll, blues, garage and something darkly soulful. His lyrics are full of his demons, his passions and artists that deserve to be honored. The album starts off by this dirty saxophone played by Dag Stiberg and with luscious sounds trickling over that filthy sax which provide you with an enchanting mantra. And then the rambunctious guitar kicks in; followed quickly by drums that let you know the shit is about to hit the fan. And then the wild music starts. There is no holding back here and every curve taken becomes a possible deathtrap. You can hear the effort in playing along at the very point of the needle and his voice professes his needs with razor sharp precision. This continues in the second song Shot By The Blues where his overly romantic soul again tells about all that is wrong. The soulful guitar underlines every one of his carefully weighed words. For a moment there you expect this track to go the way of opener Speaking In Tongues; but after the intro the guitar turns you onto a rock ‘n roll pop sensible melody. He shows he is also capable of writing excellent songs with heads, tails and actual choruses. With the lingering melody and lyrics still in your head we grind to a full stop as the dirty sax dies away before slowly growing cold as the organ and sax start building their cathedral. Dramatic guitar and drums adding to the lofty walls before his voice crackling with emotion starts: ‘I cannot tell you what I’m feeling…’ Don’t Let’em Bring You Down is dark but with a faint glimmer of hope telling you to just hold on. There will probably be another day and things can always change. The music is grandiose and bordering on delusional; it fits with the imagery and story portrait like that of a lone rower weathering a storm in a dingy little boat…

Violet is evil and it’s best to forget this girl. Garage and roll guitars and drums; with a wailing sax and a definitive wavering singer. Should I stay or should I go? Frode Jacobsen of Madrugada performs the rumbling bass for he badly wanted to play on this record. He therefore locked the regular player Raymond Jensen in the bathroom claiming that Jensen could not make it to the studio that day and he would love to fill in for him. I Don’t Need You has more of that angst, anxiety and nervousness as he tries to set himself free. This slow building rocking blues does not see its wanted release and probably professes the fact that he still isn’t free even though his voice may say so. The same goes for Made Out Of Stone which incorporates something of an Middle Eastern or North African influence to make it all grow even larger. The percussion and guitars are out of this world. The next song gave name to the band the remaining members founded after Mr. Burås passed away. Kitchie Kitchie Ki-Me-O. It rolls and it slows and it crashes and it moves like water and has this chased lyrics with a great release. And exactly when you start to feel overwhelmed by all the emotions and guitar assaults; he slows down and picks up the acoustic guitar. He throws his most genuine, moving and heartfelt song about his wrongdoings and loss at you: Love Is Gone. Arresting and stunningly beautiful. He faces his demons once again with the ‘simple’ but loud rocker Shakin’ Of My Demons. Followed by One Last Dance that has this beautiful anti rhythm in comparison to the rest of the record. It closes with I’ll Let The Light Shine On You. Apparently written for the 2002 Grit album by Madrugada they could never get it to work properly. He then dove into the studio with his Creeps in 2006 and recorded it within a few takes. It starts off just as magically as the record did and puts you into a luscious state of saddened zen. It was also the last song played at the Hyllestkonsert - Oya Tribute festival for Robert a month later where all his Madrugada, My Midnight Creeps, Ricochets, Dum Dum Boys and Sereena Maneesh friends played a set on stage. The album therefor ends with a definite send off; a deep sad note with a slight hopeful spotlight on the knowledge that some notes are only played right when they’re blue… Blue notes that will last forever and ring on into legend…

"When I'm gone, people won't have to talk about me anymore, they can just listen to the music." Robert S. Burås (1975-2007)

Many thanks JK - informative, interesting, passionate ...... nice one dude!

Ayr - Nothing Left To Give

Last year Ayr released "Nothing Left To Give" - a howl
of atmospheric black metal that showed that they had
found their voice and identity in this bleak and dark genre.
Although not a huge BM follower, this album had a huge

me away. It has now been re-released on vinyl so you, my

Bute - Crustatomic

Band request from France.

Bute are a two piece who manage to make huge racket without
the help of any other band members.

These guys play frantic and fast crust/punk with a blinding disregard
for your ears or sensibilities. This is basic stuff but with the furious
sound of passion that overrides any aesthetics.

Short songs that grab your attention are blasted through their paces,
giving these tracks areal sense of urgency.

This ain't no macho posturing, just some noise filled ditties

Lair Of The Minotaur - Godslayer EP news

Lair Of The Minotaur enter once more into the world
of monolithic riffs, howled vocals, thrash with hardcore attitude
and the desire to stomp their way to a swamp full of sludge.

Only two tracks on offer but fans will be relieved to hear
that things have not changed for these guys - loud, heavy
and relentless is still the order of the day, making me hope that
a new album will materialise in the near future.

Band blurb:
Celebrating ten years of clear-cut maliciousness through Greek mythology and unchecked riff savagery in 2013, Chicago trio LAIR OF THE MINOTAUR will storm back with a new EP this Spring.

While the members of LAIR OF THE MINOTAUR have been skulking around in the back-alleys of the underground over recent months, the band has been far from dormant. To commemorate a full decade of demolishing eardrums on record and on stage this year, the band will hammer their fanbase with a brand new EP for this year’s Record Store Day. Entitled Godslayer, the new 7” release bears two new tracks, with the surge of "Godslayer" opening up, and the monolithic "The Black Heart of the Stygian Drakonas" on the B-side, both tracks mastered by Scott Hull (Pig Destroyer). A limited edition of 300 copies will be pressed as a 7”, in addition to the digital download through iTunes, Amazon MP3 and the like, and as with their latest album Evil Power will be released on their own The Grind-House Records with distribution from previous label home, Southern Lord, for Record Store Day this April 20th.

Check out the Godslayer cover art designed by visual artist Tom Denney -- artist for LOTM’s Carnage EP, Ultimate Destroyer LP and s/t demo covers, and known for works for Kylesa, Sourvein, Soilent Green, Saint Vitus, Yakuza, Black Cobra, Rwake, Samothrace, Weedeater among others.

Usnea - S/T

With a sonic template made up of sludge, post-metal and
interspersed with black/doom elements, Usnea have produced
a debut album that I can see on a lot of peoples end of year list.

This fusion mixes up bleak ominous passages with blast beats
of pure ferocity that creates a juggernaut of unstoppable mayhem.

There are moments of atmospheric, almost psychedelic ambience
which rather than just being there for the "loud/quiet" moments,
adds a musical depth that engages the listener. The raw vocals
do not overpower the music and are mixed in perfectly with the
instruments, leaving room for the guitars to echo in the background
or to explode with violence.

This album has an epic feel to it, helped by the lengthy running
time of the tracks, giving the music time to evolve within the structure
of the song passages.

Band blurb:
USNEA’s self-titled LP fuses elements of funeral and death doom, sludge metal, black metal, and esoteric drone into an oppressive 30 minute journey of anger and despondency. Throughout, USNEA effortlessly walk a fragile line between the nastiness of sludge doom and the melodic, mournful sound of funeral doom, never allowing their sound to stay in one place too long. The use of dynamics is key on this album with nasty sludge riffs giving way to oppressively sad droning sections and (one) searing black metal interlude. This diversity of sound, texture and dynamics distinguish USNEA from the hordes of doom bands entering the scene today.

This self-titled LP features beautiful black and metallic silver artwork, a black and white 11x 22 poster and a download card with the LP tracks plus two bonus tracks (55 minutes of music in all). It was recorded at Haywire Studios by Fester (Atriarch, Stoneburner, Knelt Rote, Nux Vomica, Rabbits, etc), mastered by Adam Gonsalves at Telegraph Mastering and released in February, 2013 by
Orca Wolf Records.

USNEA formed in July, 2011 in Portland, Oregon and feature a current/former member of Amarok and The Makai. Since forming they have shared the stage with Yob, Bell Witch, Atriarch, Whitehorse, Stoneburner, Black Tusk and many more.

Members: Zeke Rogers - drums, Joel Williams - bass & vocals,
Johnny Lovingood - guitar, Justin Cory - guitar & vocals

Recommended for fans of: Neurosis, Thou, Laudanum, Khanate, Graves at Sea

Senior Fellows - Ecclesiastical Servitude

Band request from Tulsa, Ok.

Senior Fellows have the two of the guys from Heemeyer in
the lineup so you know you are gonna get a faceful of spite!

Merging sludge, hardcore and some noise rock, this collection
of songs break out of the mould with some playing that has
an almost mathy feel to the complex but heavy tracks.

Great production brings out every angry note played with a clarity
sometimes missing in this genre. The riffs are downtuned
monsters that have an unstoppable groove to them while the
quite plainly pissed off vocals spew out tales of betrayal
and retribution.

This is a solid slab of music that had me jumping up and down
despite my fucked up back! Check these fuckers out before they
drive up to your house and torch it down.

This instrumental, improvised track shows the mind melding
music that only a collection of people who are grooving totally

Enabler - Shift Of Redemption EP

Enabler are back with this 4 track EP and straight away show
why they are one of hardcores brightest hopes.

They seemed to have refined their sound - things are heavier,
sharper and if it is possible, more frantic than ever.

The bass now sounds like Lemmy shooting his love juice into
a fuzz box with the resulting offspring being raised by riff
loving Satanists who worship at the Altar of Bowel Disturbance.
This pins down the razor sharp drumming which has a frenetic
pace but still retains a really powerful sound.

The guitars combine hardcore, crust and some metallic elements
which give an unstoppable sound that just gives these songs
a vitality and urgency sometimes missing in this genre.

The vocals are a devastating blend of growls, yelps and screams
and these are used to great effect on "Live Low" - the chorus
of "Fuck you and fuck you and fuck you forever" has stuck in my
head and I now find myself muttering this under my breath as I make
my way to work at the wage slave factory.

Highly recommended!

Ruined Families - Blank Language

Band request from Greece.

Ruined Familes have a violent mix of hardcore and crust
that propels this collection of songs along with aggression
and passion.

The music is dense and chaotic and pretty much unrelenting.
There are some melodic guitar riffs that weave through the
tracks, giving some passages some light and dark sonic
shading but in the whole is pretty full on.

The lyrics are personal and bleak which is reflected in the vocal
style. The production has a "live" feel to it which seems to suit
this band right down to the ground.

Electricjezus - Грязь поколений

Some fucked up sounds from Russia for you.

Mixing up sludge/doom and punk attitude, this 2 man noise
machine come across like the Melvins on a bad trip.

The raspy vocals are in Russian but you do not need a language
degree to know they are pissed off. Down-tuned riffs plough their
relentless way through tracks of doomy heaviness which are
bookmarked by audio samples - mainly from horror films!

This was a nice blast to start my day off - check 'em out
via the name your price at Bandcamp

Band blurb:

Electricjezus – two man band from Russia, Moscow region, Dmitrov.
The group consist of 2 people, but a set of instruments remains classical – guitar, drums, bass. It became possible by installing single bass pickup in the neck of guitar. Also we use a very thick strings for best bass sound and use two 22” rides or piece of metal for hi hat. All our lyrics on album in Russian.
The band’s style is very, very multifaceted, you can find here post rock, sludge metal, doom metal, power violence, black metal, hardcore, stoner and everything you want. This is partly due love for groups like Melvins, Electric Wizard, Earth, Jucifer, Today Is The Day, Sunn O))), Monarch, Flipper, Acid Bath, Scratch Acid, Burning Witch, Dystopia, Pantera, etc. We took a piece of these groups, added our surrounding reality (dirt, noise, monotony) and got our music. With this concept we played about a dozen shows in various cities including Moscow, Moscow region and St. – Petersburg.
Not long ago, we recorded a rusty, damp and dirty album titled «Mud of generations», and want to introduce it to you! It was recorded entirely on analog equipment and it fully live record, we recorded the album close to reality and it sounds exactly as we sound on live performances. During recording, we used analog equipment from different years and from different countries, old Soviet synthesizers, old piano, use ride cymbals or broken crash with piece of metal for hi hats, use old microphones.
For the integrity album we decided to insert audio from popular and not so horror films.
These inserts reflect the character and mood of the songs, so we recommend you Listen album from the beginning to the end.

Eight Bells - The Captain's Daughter

Formed from the ashes of SubArachnoid Space, Eight Bells
is the new project for founder Melynda Jackson and drummer
Chris Van Huffel.

Using the template of sonic guitar exploration, Eight Bells
bring a more metal and evil feeling vibe than previously
used with SubArachnoid Space.

With new member Haley Westeiner on bass and vocals - which
are minimal - this trio are forging a sinister mix of prog-metal
and bursts of experimental blackened chaos.

Super freaked solos wash over drones and feedback while the
thunderous drumming pushes the riffs into noise filled squalls
of distorted, psychedelic jams that have the feeling of chaos
that threatens to make everything fall apart ...... but then, delicate
passages with ghostly ambience bring things back together again.

I loved SAS but with this album, some of the post-rock noodlings
have gone, leaving a much more stripped down band that are boldly
going into the unknown, without a compass or map .... fuck knows
where they are going but I will gladly jump on board and see
where we end up.

This goes straight away into my albums of the year list.

Highly recommeded.

Hands Of Doom - Black Sabbath Tribute

Tribute albums - don't you fucking hate them ....... but this one
is different.

Just as France seems to be producing excellent hardcore & crust bands,
Italy has been the fertile breeding ground of all things sludge-like
or doom. The songs here are a loving recreation of Sabbath tracks
and mostly do a really good job. Heavy and fuzz filled, I
think it is worth a listen - hey it's free as well.

I found it on an Italian website - I do not speak the lingo but
it seems to have been produced for a music mag.

Magazine blurb:
The contribution that Black Sabbath gave to modern music is much wider than having created a musical genre, Heavy Metal, in spite of the fact that the latter feature alone would deserve enormous admiration. Black Sabbath’s art is a reference for style, an archetype of work, a unique fusion of styles ranging from blues to rock, jazz and up to psych and prog experimentation and with the involvement of an orchestra and synth into a new rock formula. Black Sabbath have always been ahead of their times and have looked at everyday world with lucid craziness for transforming it in a scary and esoteric way. And this is where their innovative approach resides, i.e. having conceived pop and rock music not as a means for comfortably entertaining the listeners but for scaring and menacing them. The gruesome bell tolls and the rumbling thunder grimly opening the 1970 album Black Sabbath tell us that the happy decade of the Sixties and their issues about peace and love, flower power and hippies, are definitely, formally and ideally a closed chapter. A new era had started drenched with horror, with fear of the Cold War and of Vietnam, of the atomic bomb and of heroin. All of these themes were brightly developed in Geezer Butler’s surreal style. Hence Black Sabbath’s influence was not constrained simply to the music realm but was also reflected in the ethics of the many who explored the dark side of the human mind in music. Such aspect manifested also in the graphical representation, in the lyrics and in the choreography of live shows that became a reference point for all heavy bands. The early, 1969 - 1978 Black Sabbath line-up, the one including Ozzy, never ceased experimenting till the end while always trying to improve and find new combinations of sounds. This is the greatest teaching Black Sabbath gave to modern generations: always try and challenge your limits and do not be scared of daring. Only from personality and originality blooms true art.

Fragment - Temporary Enlightenment

Band request from France.

Fragment is a one-man project from Thierry A. who has
several releases to his credit (EP, split, albums, compilations) on
various labels (ConSouling Sounds, Denovali Records, Happy Prince...)
in many years, and created its own musical path, between ambient, drone,
alternative metal, shoegaze, slowcore, industrial and electronica elements.
"Temporary enlightenment" is the natural consequence of all these creative experiences.

With a tip of the hat to Jesu and MBV, Fragment pulls you
along with slow moving tracks all awash with swirling
distorted guitars, brooding drums and reverb drenched,
cleanly sung vocals.

With drones and keyboards underneath the song passages,
you have ambient music that bites. Restrained heaviness
urges these tracks through their dark journey.

Chillout music with guitars ....... cool.
