Tyranny is Tyranny - Let It Come From Whom It May

Russell and Jason from the sadly missed United Sons
Of Toil are back, simpler and heavier with the band
Tyranny Is Tyranny.

Influenced by the 90's Am Rep sound but also drawing inspiration
from post-rock/metal hybrids like Cult of Luna and Fall of Efrafa,
the music is full of open dynamics and rawness that thanks to
the crystal clear production, enable you to hear every note.

The vocals are low in the mix and vary between shouts, yelps,
croons, threats and shouts which suit the political lyrics. The tracks
are for the most, mid-paced, meaning they do not get lost in a
flurry of mad trash.

There is unreleased tension in the song dynamics - this can
sometimes reach unbearable peaks before the circular riffs
are unleashed to a climax. There are a lot of minor chords used
that, certainly to my ears, bring in musical motifs of sadness and
regret - these provide an effective mood enhancer for when the
anger and bile start to seep through the tracks.

This is an accomplished and confident start from a band that
have produced one of the best noise rock albums of the year -
full of intelligence, fire and passion.

Recommended.

United Sons Of Toil - Goodbye!

One of the most dynamic bands of the last few years
have decided to call it a day. They leave behind a legacy
of post-hardcore wit, aggression, passion and vision.

I for one will sadly miss them - all the best
with whatever you all choose to do in the future.

Farewell

After much thought and many personal struggles, we have decided to put an end to USoT. It is with heavy hearts that we look towards the future without this important part of our lives. USoT was so much more than music and it will be nigh-impossible for us to replace this passion, activism, and community going forward. Thanks everyone.

Final Shows

Friday October 19 @ The Dragonfly with our good friends Knife The Symphony, Nonagon, and Dick The Bruiser.

Saturday October 20 @ Quenchers, Chicago with KtS and Nonagon again.

Discounted Merch

Cleaning out the merchandise. All our physical products (LPs, CDs, T-shirts, and tour posters) are now 20% off on our Bandcamp site. Enter the code “farewell” when you check out.

The Future

Jason and Russell continue to play in Tyranny Is Tyranny and plan on recording in December. (They are also working on a new band with a focus on touring.)

The United Sons Of Toil - Forces Of Production (2012)

I have to admit to approaching this collection of remixed tracks
with some trepidation.

When you have a powerful sounding band, so often the predictable
results are just to make everything sound unbearably noise filled
and heavier-than-heavy.

The United Sons Of Toil have shown admirable restraint in selecting
the tracks represented here.

Dub, electronic glitches, ambient spaces giving the songs a new dimension
and a paring down of sound makes this an excellent listen. In fact, this
goes beyond "just" a remix album and instead deserves to sit along side
other USOT releases as another side to them.

Don't take my word for it, because they are good guys, you can pay
what you want from Bandcamp

Here is their own description of putting these tracks together:
We are inescapably immersed in a cut-and-paste culture. The oft-plagiarist world of musical inspiration has given way to digital deconstruction and reassembly. Individual tracks become raw material — merely starting points for new compositions. Five years in the making, this record documents a series of experiments in recontextualizing our music. Only one rule existed for this project: use only audio from the original recording — creativity often thrives under harsh limits.
