KILLING JOKE - WHAT'S THIS FOR...! 1981

This is the only Killing Joke album I have in my collection....... I've heard others and not really got on with them. This is a very hard album......hard in content and hard on the head !! I bought this shortly after it came out and it has always been a favourite album of mine from the post punk era of the early 80's. The rather disturbing and bizarre cover gives the listener a clue that what lies ahead isn't best suited for a sunny summer afternoon. 

Everything from vocals to drums is sharp, brutal, hard and confrontational in nature....no round comfortable edges to found anywhere. Great choppy guitar riffs, growling bass lines and pounding drums that will whirr round your skull long after the record has finished. Here's a couple of tracks to whet your appetite...

Killing Joke - Extremities, Dirt & Various Repressed Emotions (1990)

After the relatively mellow "Brighter Than A Thousand

Suns" and "Outside The Gates", Killing Joke returned

with this monster of an album.

Brutal industrial rhythms, distorted guitars banging

out relentless riffs, Coleman on fine form ranting so

much, you can almost feel the spittle coming out of

the speakers, this marked the beginning of the rich

form that would produce many more albums with

the aggression that many people thought had drifted away.

With the exception of two scheduled posts, this is it until

next year.

Killing Joke - S/T (1980)

This came out and blew me away. Post-punk/

industrial/metal war dance - whatever you want

to call it, it stayed on my record player for a year!

Fat dance bass grooves, stabbing keyboards, wall

of sound guitar that had tunes as well as power,

tribal drumming and of course vocals by Jaz C.

In a year when a lot of new bands were emerging

from the States to make me jump up and down,

the first Killing Joke album was top of my list of

things to play when I wanted to break things!

Fantastic return to form but did not seem

to get any press attention at all ..................
