Subhumans - From the Cradle to the Grave 1984

From start to finish, this is a masterpiece.
When it was released in '84 there was
nothing like it. Anarco Punk band with a
concept track that was over 15 minutes long!
One of the best punk bands around at that
time, the Subhumans always delivered with
solid songs, fast and heavy, great guitar riffs
with snippets of lead and Dicks barked vocals.

Get angry and Listen

Eternal Tapestry - The Invisible Landscape 2010

Many thanks for Soundweave for this one.
Eternal Tapestry supply wah-wah soaked
riffs over which the band groove into trance
like mantras of guitar worship.

Rather than a stoner/doom feel, they have
given us a more Psychedelic album, rooted
in Hawkwind, Spaceman 3 and heavy Kraut.

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez - Old Money 2008

Recorded after The Mars Volta album
"Amputechture", this is an astounding
record of densely textured guitar freak
outs, with the usual Omar trademark
of effect pedals, tightly woven with seemingly
every instrument he could lay his hands on
but never losing the incredible groove -
kinda like Carlos Santana on speed, playing
with a gun to his head in case he slows down!

Rodriguez-Lopez is a hugely prolific artist -
At The Drive In/Mars Volta/De Facto + all
his solo stuff. Sometimes I think he suffers
from the "Zappa Syndrome" - a lot of his albums
do tend to blend into each other - maybe a bit
of editing/pruning required just to slow him
down and become more cohesive......... pah!
what do I know?

Old Money is my personal fave - go on, give
it a Listen

Outcry Collective - Articles 2009

I recall this band got a lot of shit reviews
when the album came out. Fuck knows why.

Is it because they sound like American
hardcore but come from leafy Surrey?

Dirty, scuzzy songs about small town life
come alive with throbbing bass and rabid
guitar riffs, shot throughout with wonderful
snippets of lead work and a snarling vocal
delivery.

Jump aboard and listen Here.

Minsk - With Echoes in the Movement of Stone 2009

This slow burns through twisted, psychedelic
post-metal with equal measures of bombast and
deliberation.

Minsk have a huge wall of textured sound that
sound overpowering but within the sonic barrage,
there are many delicate flourishes that emerge
with repeated listens.

Oh yeah and the vocalist sounds like he eats
babies .... Listen

High Rise - Live 2001

Fuzz laden, Japanese Psychedelic rock that
mixes up Guitar Wolf, Stooges and the MC5
to deliver a tasty stew of noise and attitude
that goes straight for the brain and screams
Muthafucker as loud as possible!

The Stooges - Raw Power live

This is the Stooges Raw Power set from 2nd May
at the Hammersmith Appollo. Taken from a
soundboard recording and sold on a USB stick,
this is as good as a Stooge recording gets .......
Metallic KO anyone?

This comes from the very kind Moggieboy who
runs the Ripped In Glasgow blog - lots of eclectic
posts - give it a look Here.

Any doubts that Williamson could recreate his
napalm attack guitar was quickly put to rest
as this jaw droppingly good set went on.

Just fucking fantastic - Search & Destroy!

Jerusalem - Jerusalem 1972

Back in 1972, Ian Gillan took a fledgling
band under his wing and produced this
album.

Sounding like early Sabbath or a
keyboardless Purple, these songs have
an urgency and rawness that still sounds
good now. It does not claim to be proto-stoner
or any other labels that old bands sometimes
now have.

If you want a bit of classic rock in early 70's

Conifer - Crown Fire 2008

A bit of doom/sludge with lashings of
atmospheric post-metal. Conifer play
loud and heavy but never forget about
dynamics or tension. You know the drill -
lots of bone shaking bass, thundering drums,
explosive guitars with the odd grunted vocal.

Velvet Underground - Guitar Amp Tapes 1969

Ever wanted to hear Lou Reed play
guitar in the VU louder?

Here you go. A gig with the guitar
mike shoved into his amp capturing
all his sonic glory ..... and the quiet
delicate bits you could never hear.

You can read whole essays about this
tape - how Reed applied free jazz
improvisational techniques on a rock
format and used Ornette Coleman
harmolodics to his guitar work .....
or just a man hitting his guitar very hard
and making a glorious noise.

The quality is not as bad as you think, you
can still make out the songs but in the distance.

If you want to listen to the VU songbook,
probably best to stay clear but if you want to
hear some sonic mangling - get some White Light, White heat

Sun Dial - Return Journey 1991

This trio play full blown psychedelia with
a garage rock feel. These are studio jams
released as an album and have a more
unpolished, rougher edge then some of
their other recordings.

If you like Magic Lanterns or a slow
Earthless, why not Dig those fuzz Guitars!

Leatherface - Mush 1991

I had always heard of Leatherface and the
main man, Frankie Stubbs but found the
records hard to get, so it was a while after
they were out before I got to hear them.

"Mush" is probably the one I play the most -
melodic punk at its finest - like an English
Husker Du with bits of early Motorhead
in the sound and power.

My copy has some bonus tracks on here

Nigeria Rock Special

15 tracks from the underground rock scene
in 1970's Nigeria. Fuzzed out funk influenced
by Hendrix and Santana, this is the sound
of West African music grooving with the
Psychedelic and Guitar rock records that
were being imported.

Different but good Let's boogie

I messed up the artist tags but track listing
is on this Word Doc

The Butthole Surfers - Locust Abortion Technician 1987

"Well, son, the funny thing about regret is
that it's better to regret something you have
done that to regret something you haven't done.
And by the way, if you see your mom this
weekend, will you be sure and tell her
Satan! Satan! Satan!"

So starts "Sweat Loaf", the bands skewed take
on Sabbath. This album is the one that got
me into the Buttholes.

Paul Leary's blistering guitar lines and Gibby
Haynes manical yelping and distorted singing
wormed their way into my head.

"Graveyard" sinks a riff that cannot be
forgotten, while "22 going on 23" is a
horrific radio interview by an abused
woman played over the devils rock'n'roll.
Once heard, even if you do not like it,
you will not forget it. Listen here

Tony Maim - Songs from a Ruptured Dog 2006

Back in 2006 I released a CD, full of old fashioned, plain
and simple Punk Rock.

If you want to hear which bits of The Clash, Damned,
Ramones and Husker Du I stole from, Listen here

Nuggets - Fuzz Geetar

The full title is "Nuggets: Original Artyfacts
from the First Psychedelic Era 1965 - 1968"

In 1972, Lenny Kaye, then the guitarist from
the Patti Smith group, compiled a double
album of obscure and forgotten gems which
coined the term "Garage Rock"

In 2006 this was re-released as an expanded
4 CD box set. I have put together a compilation
from over 120 tracks - only the most fuzziest
riffs made it on!

Don't thank me. Just listen to The Litter, Amboy
Dukes, Chocolate Watch Band, The Electric
Prunes etc Here

Norma Jean - The Anti Mother 2008

American hardcore with their 4th album.
Drawing comparisons with Botch but with
enough intricate guitar work to edge them
into math-rock fields, they also have a clever
melodic feel which combined with aggressive
vocals also feel metal-ish .............. but in a
good way. Listenhere

The Stooges - Raw Power

In my twisted head, this is one of the greatest
guitar albums ever made and I have posted
this for no other reason that I am seeing the
Stooges tonight playing Raw Power in its
entirety.

Oh Yes!!!!

Who cares?

Not that anyone will read this but looking at
various blogs, some have incredible details
and a wealth of information about albums.

Should I spend more time doing this? -
it probably will mean I will not post every
week day.

Or should I stick with my "urg ....sounds
heavy ..... make me smash things .... me like
noise and stuff...." ?

Actually, as I type this ........ fuck ya!

If you don't like it, read Wiki instead.

Love you all! Weekend treat - F Lips doing Darkside of the Moon
