Crystal Antlers - Tentacles 2009

Their debut album which blends hardcore
punk with prog psychedelia, guitar solos
fight for room over organ stabs while
hoarse vocals add to the sonic beauty.

Compared to Comets on Fire, this is
recorded by the Mars Volta producer,
so he is used to mixing in slabs of sound
with a wall of noise.

There are moments of quiet but these always
return to the madness.
Listen here or take advantage of kind Mr ZoSo))) and
listen the self titled EP here

Guitar Wolf - Jet Generation 1999

Japanese band Guitar Wolf combine the
sonics of the MC5, the rock'n'roll of Link Wray
and the punk power of early Stooges.

Grittier and dirtier than most modern
garage bands, the manic guitars race along
with primitive drums and the frenzied
unintelligible vocals prove that even if
you are not sure if you are listening to
English or Japanese, when the noise is
this good, who cares?

Black Breath - Heavy Breathing 2010

Ouch, this is vicious!

Rabid punk, hardcore and death metal
influences create a jaw dropping album
which pummels the brain and loosens
bowels. File along with Converge.

God Forbid - Earthsblood 2009

I found their earlier stuff too metalcore for me - (I hate all
these fucking genre labels but when used they do instantly
give you an idea of what the band sounds like!)

This is metal, heavy with complex structures, lots of
twin harmony guitar lead and a mixture of clean and
growled vocals.

The album has a huge, fat pounding sound to it which
some people may find too polished but it does rock like
a bastard!

Iggy Pop - Lust for Life 1977

The Passenger
He rides and he rides
He sees things from under glass
He looks through his window's eyes
He sees the things he knows is his.

Miles Davis - Dark Magus 1974

Carrying on from On The Corner, this
double live album has Miles snaking
around a Black Sabbath boogie through
a wah-wah pedal, up to his eyeballs in
columbian marching powder producing
a loud, heavy unsettling beast of a record.

Disc 1 sets the funk/space rock scene, Disc 2
lets the guitarists do their stuff.

Easy listening it ain't!

Orange Goblin - Healing Through Fire 2007

Their 6th album and if it ain't broke, don't
fix it. Big dirty riffs, scrappy vocals with
sonic wah-wah and firing on all cylinders,
this is classic Orange Goblin.

There is a slightly heavier feel to this -
the blues element is replaced with a doomy
thread which gives it a more aggressive outlook.

Pissed Jeans - King of Jeans 2009

The wonderfully named Pissed Jeans are
signed to Sub Pop and are an American
noise rock/post-hardcore band.

Punk tunes mixed with hardcore attitude
makes this a uncomfortable (at times) listen
due to the jagged song structure but it's
a ride worth taking.

Baroness - Red Album 2007

Last year the Blue Album was released and
it was fantastic but I will always have a soft
spot for the Red one.

2007 and I had dabbled in the world of sludge
and doom but Baroness and Mastodon really
opened up the world of down-tuned guitars,
bile filled vocals and the slanted lyrical view
of swamp dwellers!

Frank Zappa - Hot Rats 1969

For years people kept playing me Zappa but
there was nothing there for me - just some '70's
rock with "jokey" lyrics and vocals.

No one told me he was also a Guitar God. This
was the album that changed my mind. Virtually
instrumental this gave Zappa a jazz rock
platform to perform his incredible guitar jams.

Architects - Hollow Crown 2009

The Brighton based boys 3rd album.

Vicious, twisting riffs and vocal attack
with epic melodic guitar attack blended
with post-metal and mathcore.

Brutal enjoyment!

The Scientists - Weird Love 1986

Scuzzy, Aussie swamp rock, Stooge driven riffs
and strangled vocals over killer tunes.

What's not to like?

Killing Joke - Hosannas from the Basement of Hell 2006

It's Killing Joke so you know how good
it is.

Fantastic return to form but did not seem
to get any press attention at all ..................
give it a listen!!!!

The Corpse Grinders - Legend Of The Corpse Grinders 1978

Not a death grindcore release but a band formed
by Arthur "Killer" Kane after he left the New York
Dolls.

Named after a trashy horror film, The Corpse
Grinders sounded like the Dolls (surprise, surprise!)

This was released in '78 and took the Dolls blueprint
but embraced the fledgling rawness of punk & new wave
to give a marvelous beefier sound.

Arthur Kane played on the singles and demo versions
but left before this album was recorded.

Textures - Silhouettes 2008

Textures play Tech-Metal that is both
brutal and medolic. Huge landscapes of
riffage and vocals veering between clean
and hardcore type grunts make this a very
impressive album ...... heavier than Minsk
or Nuerosis?

They certainly give it a go!

Latitudes - Agonist 2009

Re-posted request.
Latitudes are a Sludge/Post-Metal band
who sometimes cross over to the more
open sound and space of Pelican etc.

Mostly instrumental, the rest of the
information I had on this band has been
lost! ...... er, listen to the clip for an idea!

Miles Davis - On The Corner 1972

Atonal jazz freak out - Davis wanted to explore
the sounds of Hendrix and Sly Stone with
his own version of funk rock.

Too hard to describe - listen to the clip!!!!

Planes Mistaken For Stars - Mercy 2006

Post-Hardcore with passion and direction.
The angular twists and turns never let up
and the furious guitar work and vocals
ensure an ear bleeding good time.
