The Leather Nun - Slow Death

This is the 1st thing I ever heard from this Swedish
band. An EP that manages to flit between thuggish, sweaty
punk and minimal industrial rock.

“No Rules” starts things off - a distorted, Stooge type
riff that bowls along with Punk/Motorhead speed
and attitude.

“Slow Death” comes next - all slow and menacing sparse
guitars, crooning vocals and industrial drums and menacing
drones, loops and noises to accompany lyrics about
someone dying from 90% body burns - very much like
Suicides “Frankie Teardrops”

“Ensam I Natt” is a 2 minute punk song followed by
“Death Threats” - drum/bass loops with muffled
guitar and vocals with what sounds like drills, phones
and a typewriter all being used in the background.

It all ends with a live version of “Slow Death” - 15 minutes
of drone and misery helped by Genesis P-Oridge on
violin, the synth sounds are much more to the front
and there is a slow motion wah wah solo that sounds
like there are only 3 notes played.

I played this to death and they never got this weird again.

POles - Marmyteran

Yet another instrumental math-rock album? This genre seems
to be treading water now with cut’n’paste bands springing up
everywhere with little riffs played over and over, thinking
that without a vocalist, they are breaking new ground!

Well thank fuck for POles! This sounds fresh and vibrant with an
urgency that demands to be listened to. Of course there are light and
dark shades within the song arrangements but there is also an epic
feel to the tracks. When the intricate parts start to explode into bigger
riffs, the guitars stomp on fuzz boxes with gusto and a heaviness
that demands you start to jump up and down.

Like the demented offspring of Don Caballero and Pelican,
Zvoov have plainly showed how to find their own voice. If anyone

you know has any interest in math-rock, point ‘em this way!

Thanks to Bruno from the band for sending this.

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Have You Ever Been To Electric Afroland? - Tropical Grooves & Afrofunk International Vol.4

Here is funk-driven collection that fucking rocks..

The Paris DJs Soundsystem have sourced a collection of Afrofunk,
Afrorock, Afrojazz, Afrobeat, Latin or Brazilian Funk & Ethio-Jazz
from the 21st century has been prepared the other way round,
starting from the end and the packaging, ending with music and the
mastering of the final selection.

And the spirit of Jimi Hendrix floating in the studio...
These songs have a groove and beat that just make my feet start to stomp.
Some of the tracks are truly infectious and are perhaps even more relevant
to the rockier and psychedelic influences within the contemporary Afro
musical spectrum.

A lot of dirty, distorted guitar is sprayed around this album and combined
with the afrobeat percussion make this a no-brainer if you own
any music by Santana, Band of Gypsys or have ever dug anything with
a raw funk vibe.

Time to take your black t-shirt off, put some love beads on, go out
in the daylight and have some fun!

Paris DJs also have an incredible blog where you can download free,
over 400 mixes from their past sets. Have a look, have a listen,

GUITAR WOLF - JET GENERATION 1999

I really don't know where to start with this bunch of crazed
Japanese madmen nor what genre to place them in....
I think " a bloody great row" would sum it up !!
I wasn't really sure if it warrants inclusion here either but Tony
says that if it makes us jump up and down then its worthy of
a mention.....and listening to this always makes me smile.

I'll start with repeating his original notes to me when he gave
me this album to listen to many years ago...." Japanese
band who think that the guitar sound on the Iggy remixed Stooges
"Raw Power album is weak and not distorted enough !"

This mix is beyond "the red", in fact, off the spectrum with the
drums sometimes disappearing under the sheer weight of distortion !
I couldn't find a track off the actual album to put here for your l
istening pleasure (?) but here are a couple of the tracks done live
....including the most fucked up version of Summertime Blues you
will ever hear !! They seem to have the same approach
to their live sound as in the studio...be warned and good luck !!

Hure - S/T

Band request from Berlin

HURE are not making music for humans. They are
producing music for the damned and doomed.
Using a drum machine, guitar, bass and vocals, the
tracks are a vortex of harsh abrasions, distorted white noise
and shards of amplified anger.

This is how their label describes them.

HURE fucking destroys! How can such nice people do that kind of noisy brainfuck? Maybe it is that catharsis thing. Or its this "barking dogs do not bite" thing. But whatever it is, HURE barks like a rotten dog who is tortured with steel and fire. This sound is so fucking dirty, evil and rotten to the core, that even 99% out of the hard hitting rock´n´roll scene think its bullshit. But your favorite tape label TrimTabTapes is part of the 1% who thinks, this fucking bastard band rules like hell. Repetative and loud as fuck - thats what rock´n´ roll is meant to be. It all started with Little Richard and now we have HURE! This is the kind of music your parents will never understand. But fuck em all, get that tape and start banging your head against the wall.

First Process Church Of Mars - 6 Leaves Left

First Process Church Of Mars are a 3 piece heavy
Stoner/Psychedelic Rock band from Hartlepool in the North
East of England. All songs are improvised in a live
environment in the studio.

North East England is not the place you would expect to hear
desert-fried music drifting through the ether of space but here
I am, nodding to a heavy lysergic vein of blissed out music.

This is not just some guys slowing down some blues riffs
and calling themselves stoner/psych - First Process Church
Of Mars have conjured up some real atmosphere - think of the
sinister codas contained within "The End" by the Doors.

Guitars are picked out, gradually fx-laden freakouts are
introduced which lead to heavy neo-psych explosions of
sound and expression.

With no vocals, drones, wandering throbbing bass and drums
that seem to be shamanistic, this is heady stuff.

Recommended!

"The killer awoke before dawn, he put his boots on"

No release yet but like 'em on Facebook - they hope to
get a free download code on Bandcamp soon.

And they are looking for gigs early next year.

Prag - Demo

Prag come from Perth, Australia and play some nasty,
distorted hardcore.

Heavily reverbed vocals spit out bursts of bile over
thrashed songs that are primitive and powerful.

Italian hardcore mixed with early US punk seems
the road these guys are treading and that is fine with me!
Fast brutal, full of aggression - if you want to recreate getting
kicked in the face many times, give this a listen!

Black Capricorn - Born Under The Capricorn

Doom with monster grooves and soul does not
come along often but when it does, I play it loud and often.

Italian doom seems to be spreading its demonic blues far and
wide with Black Capricorn being no exception. With a 70's
classic feel, the sound is deep, warm, fuzzy and heavy with
the song writing strong enough to keep attention fixed on the
groove and riff no matter how short or long the tracks are.

Strong, cleanish vocals deliver the lyrics with enough dire warning
to evoke a sense of foreboding without going down the worn route
of sub-Lovecraftisms. Slow paced, faster, acoustic picking to head
exploding walls of power, this album has it all for me. This is
what doom should always sound like! (again, this is a personal
thing - if you like lightweight 70's copy bands, that is up to you!)

I have to mention the guitars - wah-wahed solos with big, meaty
notes that steer clear of fretboard wankery, instead they make
each note count and drill into your skull. Atmospherics are skillfuly
created with synths, soundscapes and masterful use of a harmonica
in just the right place.

This should be only any doomheads playlist.

Thanks to Lucas for turning me onto these guys.
