Akimbo - City of the Stars

Released in 2004, those generous guys at Seventh Rule Records
have now put this up for a free download.

Akimbo use a hardcore template and add a healthy dose of
ferocious riffs that crush together elements of noise with metal.

More experimental than a lot of their peers at this time, amongst
the shit-kicking tunes you can hear punk influences, bluesy
sludge - much like Botch, although very heavy, they obviously
felt no need to be straight-jacketed into one specific genre.

Death Grips - The Money Store

The new album from Death Grips is now out.

You know the score - experimental hip hop with more punk
attitude than a lot of "punk" bands around at the moment.

Just because they do not play guitars, do not think this is anything
less than a heavy, chaotic set of pounding songs.

If you liked "Ex Mililtary" you are in for a treat - if you have
never heard Death Grips before, throw aside your preconceptions
and track it down.

I have not put a download link up but if I found it, so can you.

I can smugly announce that I will be seeing them play next month!

Dead Southern Bishop - Hymns Of Malice and Discontent

Band request from Georgia, USA.

Dead Southern Bishop play thick, heavy sludge.

It ain't pretty.

But it is slow and bleak.

It is a rough as fuck.

And sometimes that's all I want.

Outtacontroller - Don't Play Dumb (2012)

Found these Canadian boys on Bandcamp and have not

stopped playing the album all week.

Chainsaw guitars spray out Ramones riffs with attitude,

the tunes could of come from the 1st Saints album and

the snotty vocal harmonies remind me of the Buzzcocks

or Strokes.

My review makes Outtacontroller sound retro but they

have a modern sound which propels all the songs along.

This is garage/punk fuzz played with joyful abandon which

combined with lyrics about graveyards, knives, drugs and

boredom leave me jumping up and down and wanting more.

It's only April but this looks like it's gonna be a heavy contender

for one my albums of the year.

Ruin Of Remembrance - Second World (2012)

Band request from Germany.

Ruin Of Remembrance play Melodic Death Metal which

is a shame as it is a genre I do not like or know about.

It sounds powerful, well recorded and heavy but it would

not be fair to give my opinion on whether it is good or

bad - it all sounds shit to me. I am not going to knock a band

for releasing an album of a particular style - at least they are

out there, playing music and making a noise.

If you like this sort of thing, there is a free download from

their website - Here

If anyone does listen to this, let me know what you think.

Torso - Inside (2012)

Band request from Austria.

Torso play mournful, psychedelic stoner rock

that have their roots in the 70's but which retain

the heavier sound and production you expect today.

The vocals have a touch of Ozzy about them and some

of the atmospherics are doomy but the main thrust of

the album are the riffs which are steeped in a warm

blues feel that sounds natural and is not just not just

a blatant copy.

I Don't Want Your Pity

Hi.

My name is Tony Maim.

And I am a music junkie.

I have been taking a break from work and

blogging to spend time with my family over

the school holidays but in reality my time off

was an excuse for me to continue my music

addiction without any external distractions.

For the last couple of weeks I have been playing

Hendrix non-stop. This of course means all the

official releases, demos, live stuff, live bootlegs,

outtakes, half finished snippets and numerous

other shoddy recordings. I have to play them all

over and over and over again until I feel I can then

make my own compilations of newer songs, classic

songs, best outtakes, live tracks without Buddy

Miles singing, tracks with keyboards on and then I

can play over and over and over again.

What is this compulsion that drives me to do these

things? Now I feel an assault on every record I own

with the tag "Noise Rock".

On Holiday - not that anyone cares.

United Sons Of Toil - update

Here is an update of the new remix album from one

of the best bands around at the moment:

USoT Remixed

In September we announced a remix project and optimistically projected a release by the end of 2011. After much churn and swirl, we sent it to mastering last week. “Relations Of Production” will be available as a free download as well as a super limited-edition CD of less than 100 (with packaging involving riveted asset tags, ribbons, and sealing wax).

You may be asking yourself “what sorts of things can I expect from remixed USoT tracks?” Well, there’s some glitch, some dub, and some ambient as well as a dance track and one vaguely reminiscent of 80s hip-hop. Regardless, all tracks have been built using only audio from the original mixes. Keep an eye on our Bandcamp site which, coincidentally, still has all USoT records downloadable for as little as $0.

Shrine - Aether (2012)

Band request from Sweden.

Shrine play heavy and intense metal with hardcore

overtones.

Merciful Fate and God Forbid come to mind when

listening to these 3 tracks but I get the feeling that they

will be able to throw off these comparisons and find

their own take on this genre.

The 1st track, which is over 6 minutes long shows the most

promise - lots of crunchy, distorted guitars that evolve halfway

through into a heavy stoner psych riff that stomps away while

the rest of the band provide suitably powerful backing.

The production is great, giving the tracks a real depth that made

me wish for a full albums worth.
