An Autumn For Crippled Children - All fell silent, everything went quiet

Having come across the last AAFC release quite late,

I have been waiting for the next one with bated breath to

see if it could match up.

Well ,"All went silent, everything went quiet" does not let you down. 

Instrumental post-rock drive the song structures but 

when the distorted guitars kick in, the mood changes 

with the powerful riffs that deliver a punch that would 

not sound out of place on a sludge album. 

The ambient passages carry a real feeling of mood that 

build up into a post-metal explosion of tension and 

release. The guitar playing is not just mindless fret- 

wanking but carry the songs along with sustained riffs 

and some wonderful note progressions. This is classy 

stuff and the tracks have a definite epic feel to them. 

There are tiny flourishes that make this stand out from the 

crowd - there are some ghostly screamed vocals which are used 

sparingly but with great effect and thekeyboards that could of been 

overworked - instead, it sits behind the riffs and give the songs 

another dimension.

This is the good shit.

Black Tusk - Pillars Of Ash

Black Tusk are back after the tragic events of 2014 and 

have returned to play some heavy based sludge punk with 

some elements of metal thrown in to make sure you are not 

getting too comfortable.

The tracks are primitive monsters, light on solos but fucking heavy

on the riffs. If early Discharge covering High On Fire

floats ya boat, keep on reading this.

The sonic production is awesome - thick, aggressive and full of

low-end battering to shake your pretty little eardrums to bits.

Fuzzed guitars have the distortion dial on 11 but never so far 

up in the mix that the bass and drums get lost.

With song titles like "Born Of Strife" and "Bleed On Your 

Knees", you need a vocalist who sounds like a rabid dingo

tearing at the corpse of clean singing while drinking moonshine

 lager mixed with the dregs of a hundred used bongs - and guess

what - they have!

Black Tusk are back and stronger than ever. 

This is the good stuff - get it now.

Head of David - Dustbowl (1988)

A heavy sounding band with Justin Broadrick

in before he went on to form Godflesh and

Jesu, Head of David were signed to Blast First

and are described as Industrial Rock/Stoner.

I can also spot bits of Killing Joke/Sabbath/

Sonic Youth.

Using a drum machine as a noise weapon, murderous

bass and uber heavy guitar, riff after riff pound

away in a thrilling mixture of power and scuzz.

This was produced by Steve Albini and (unlikely

as it seems!) gave them quite a 'rock' sound

complete with guitar solos and tunes!!
